⚔️ Opposition from Quraysh in Makkah
When Prophet Muhammad ﷺ began preaching the message of Islam publicly in Makkah, he faced immediate and severe opposition from the Quraysh – the dominant tribe in the city. The Quraysh were the custodians of the Kaaba and had a powerful socio-economic and religious influence throughout Arabia.
Why Did the Quraysh Oppose Islam?
The teachings of Islam challenged the Quraysh's polytheistic beliefs and social structure. The Prophet ﷺ taught monotheism (Tawheed), justice, and equality – values that undermined the tribal elites’ authority and their control over idol worship at the Kaaba.
Islam also emphasized compassion for the poor, condemned corruption, and called for an end to immoral practices like usury, female infanticide, and tribal arrogance. These reforms were seen as a direct threat to the Qurayshi aristocracy’s privileges and profits.
Forms of Opposition
The Quraysh used various tactics to suppress Islam:
- Mockery and Humiliation: They ridiculed the Prophet ﷺ and his followers as “madmen” and “poets.”
- Social Boycott: Muslims were ostracized, especially from the Banu Hashim clan.
- Torture and Persecution: Weak and poor Muslims like Bilal (RA) and Sumayyah (RA) were tortured brutally.
- Bribery and Temptations: Quraysh offered wealth, power, and marriage to silence the Prophet ﷺ — but he refused.
- Physical Attacks: Stones were thrown at the Prophet, and plots to kill him were devised.
The Prophet’s Patience and Perseverance
Despite the hostility, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ remained steadfast. He continued to preach with wisdom and patience. He instructed his followers to bear hardships and never respond with violence. His strength of character attracted sincere hearts to Islam.
Lessons for Today
The opposition faced in Makkah teaches us about perseverance in the face of injustice, the power of peaceful resistance, and the courage to stand for truth even when it is unpopular.
